Major League Baseball’s revised Spring Training schedule begins on Sunday, February 28, with 14 Florida Grapefruit League teams in action.

Developed with health and safety considerations in mind, Florida Grapefruit League teams will play under a regionalized schedule within Florida to mitigate travel.

MLB has revised the 2021 Florida Spring training schedule by creating pods for Florida Grapefruit League games to separate teams by their sites on Florida’s east and west coasts.  This move will reduce cross-state travel concerns during the covid-19 pandemic.

Teams were divided into three groups for the Grapefruit League season to eliminate longer bus rides:

Florida East Coast: Houston Astros, Washington Nationals (West Palm Beach), Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals (Jupiter), New York Mets (Port St. Lucie)

Florida West Coast: Baltimore Orioles (Sarasota), Detroit Tigers (Lakeland), New York Yankees (Tampa), Philadelphia Phillies (Clearwater), Pittsburgh Pirates (Bradenton), Toronto Blue Jays (Dunedin)

Southwest Florida: Atlanta Braves (North Port), Baltimore Orioles (Sarasota), Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins (Fort Myers), Pittsburgh (Bradenton), Tampa Bay Rays (Port Charlotte)

Baltimore, based in Sarasota, and Pittsburgh, in Bradenton, are part of both West Coast groups.

The west coast pod is split into north and south divisions with teams playing 28 games. The east coast pod features five teams playing 24 games.

Spring training games until March 13 may be shortened to five or seven innings if agreed upon by both managers. The completion of innings will not be required if a pitcher has thrown at least 20 pitches. Pitchers also will be permitted to re-enter games after being removed during spring training.

Split-squad games, traditionally used in the first half of the exhibition season to allow evaluation of more players, also were eliminated.
